Appendix H: Application Start-up and Closedown

Each application that runs under the menu system should have its own application library. This is where all global objects (procs, variables, messages, etc.) used by the application should be located. For example the menu system has its own library (called MENU) and the example application has its own menu (called XAMPLE).
Each library should have a boolean global variable called $$FIRST_TIME_FLAG.

Each library should have a global proc called INIT_PROC which contains code similar to the following:-

Each component should have its component library set to the application mnemonic, and should contain a call to INIT_PROC within its INIT operation. This will allow any custom processing to be performed whenever the first form within an application is activated.
The SAVE_VARIATION proc will add the current value of $variation to a list of values used within the current session.
When the menu session terminates normally, either by logging out entirely or by returning to the logon screen, this list will be retrieved so that a closedown form can be activated for each application that has been used within that session.
The name of the closedown form will be the value in $variation suffixed by "_CLOSE", which gives, for example, MENU_CLOSE and XAMPLE_CLOSE.
The closedown form should be created from component template CT_CLOSE1 which contains as a minimum the instruction $$first_time_flag = 0.This will allow any first-time processing to be repeated for the new session. Other custom processing can be added as required.
